Through an exploration of some of the major texts of Postcolonial Theory, Critical Race Theory and Gender Studies, this course aims to present critical analytical tools to investigate the (post)colonial dynamics within media representations. It explores the different ways by which media texts have been seen as reproducting the social order and the narratives of colonial teleology, with an emphasis on intersectionality – i.e. the articulation of gender, race, class and sexuality. Through case studies from a wide range of media (from cinema to TV shows, from visual arts to music videos), and translation exercices of academic texts, it seeks both to acculturate the students to the conceptual field of anglo-american media critique and to give them an understanding of the political workings of media contents.
